Ash Valley Farm Supplies, a simple Inglenook shunting layout, built to test lightweight layout construction. The whole thing weighs just 4 pounds (2Kg's) and measures 36 by 12 inches. Built to UK O scale (1:43.5) and using 9mm gauge track to depict a 15inch minimum gauge line. Getting down into the layout, the low angle showing how spacious a small layout can appear. A Springside Models steam loco pulling away from the water tank. The main store for all the goods coming in and out of the valley. The storeman pauses in his chores to chat with one of the local farmers. A loaded train getting ready to depart for the interchange with the mainline railway. My first attempt at modelling in Gn15, that is G scale (1:22.5) running on 16.5mm gauge track to depict a 15inch gauge railway. For it's scale this layout is very compact at 36 by 18 inches. Built over a 10 day period as a temporary showcase for my range of loco and wagon kits, this layout is still serving well 5 years and many exhibitions later. The stock that runs on it changes and a few of the scenic details. In the early days when the range of kits was somewhat limited, this has grown quite a lot since. With a large scale in a small space, the trains take prominence and become one of the main scenic features of the layout. An operators eye view of the action. A much photographed cameo, which always looks slightly different. An overhead view of this compact O scale, 9mm gauge layout. The track is on 2 levels, the oval around the outside to run the trains on and at a higher level in the centre, a cosmetic hand worked line. Demonstration layout built for Greenscenes to show off their scenic products, O scale on 16.5mm gauge, area 17 by 15 inches. Pizza style test track, O scale, 16.5mm gauge, area 12 by 12 inches. Rougemont Mine, an experiment in using red builders sand as a scenic covering. O scale using 9mm gauge trackwork in an area 24 by 15 inches. This project was christened One of the great things with working in the larger scales, is the ability to add little details and be able to see them. OK, this may be going further than most would want. Guess I should mention that the whole thing measures just 12 inches (305mm) by 7.5 inches (190mm) plus a plug in cassette to move the trains from one track to the other. A little corner of the layout where the details really bring it to life. All very simple, but I think effective. Guess I should take some pics which include the trains, but this project was more about the layout. The next layout, Vanguard Works preceded this one and was part of the inspiration for it. A tiny layout in G scale (1:22.5), running on 9mm gauge (N gauge) track. The scenic part of the layout is only 12 This little layout was built as the result of a challenge laid down at http://forum.gn15.info , to build a layout of cardboard and paper based products. Almost everything, including the base and buildings, are made of these materials. The rails, ground surface, loco and stock and some of the details though, are not surprisingly, made of non-paper based materials. A tranquil corner. Even at this large scale, a flat printed backdrop, can be very effective.

This particular wagon was one of several that could be fitted with a pivoting bolster. Axlebox detail and on the left of the picture can be seen the bracket for holding a bolster pin when not in use.
